VPS hosting: virtual private servers

Virtual servers

A VPS (virtual private server) is a virtual machine with its own memory, storage and root access, on a physical host whose processor time is shared between customers. It is usually the most affordable way to get a server of your own for a website, an API, a small game server or a development environment. Compare VPS and VDS side by side.

  • Every plan includes one IPv4 address and root access.

What is a VPS good for?

  • Websites, APIs and small databases
  • Development, staging and CI runners
  • Self-hosted tools such as VPNs, Git or monitoring
  • Workloads that are busy in bursts rather than all day

What it runs on

Shared by every VPS plan. The infrastructure page has more on each one.

Compute

Processor
Intel Xeon Gold 6138 in Delhi, AMD EPYC 7662 in Miami, AMD EPYC 7702P in Germany

Model and generation decide per-core speed far more than the vCPU count does.

Virtualisation
KVM

Full hardware virtualisation: your server runs its own kernel, separate from every other customer.

Storage

Backups and snapshots
One snapshot included with every VPS and VDS

A snapshot saves your server as it is, so you can roll back after a change that goes wrong.

About shared-CPU VPS

More on plans, billing and support in the FAQ.

What is a vCPU?

A vCPU is a share of a physical processor’s time that the hypervisor schedules for your virtual machine. On a VPS, several customers’ vCPUs take turns on the same physical cores, so a vCPU is not the same as a core you own.

What happens when other customers are busy?

If other virtual machines on the host want the processor at the same moment, yours may wait briefly for its turn. Linux reports that waiting as steal time, the “st” figure in top. Short spikes are normal on shared CPU. If steal time stays high while your server is busy, a plan with dedicated cores will serve it better.

When is a VPS the right choice?

When your server is idle much of the time and busy in bursts: a website, an API, a VPN, a Git server or a staging environment. You get your own memory, storage and root access for less than a server with reserved cores.

Do I get root access?

Yes. VPS plans are unmanaged virtual machines: you have full root or administrator access and choose what to install.
