VDS hosting: virtual dedicated servers

Dedicated cores

A VDS (virtual dedicated server) is a virtual machine whose processor cores are reserved for you rather than shared. You keep the convenience of a virtual server, with CPU capacity that does not depend on what other customers are running. Compare VPS and VDS side by side.

  • Every plan includes one IPv4 address and root access.

What is a VDS good for?

  • Databases and applications under steady load
  • Build servers, encoding and batch processing
  • Game servers that need consistent tick rates
  • Anything that was throttled or noisy on a shared plan

What it runs on

Shared by every VDS plan. The infrastructure page has more on each one.

Compute

Processor
Intel Xeon Gold 6138 in Delhi, AMD EPYC 7662 in Miami, AMD EPYC 7702P in Germany

Model and generation decide per-core speed far more than the vCPU count does.

Virtualisation
KVM

Full hardware virtualisation: your server runs its own kernel, separate from every other customer.

Storage

Backups and snapshots
One snapshot included with every VPS and VDS

A snapshot saves your server as it is, so you can roll back after a change that goes wrong.

About dedicated-core VDS

More on plans, billing and support in the FAQ.

What does a dedicated core mean?

It means processor cores reserved for your virtual machine and not scheduled for anyone else, so your server has the same CPU capacity whether the rest of the host is idle or busy. Each one is a dedicated CPU thread: one hardware thread of a physical core, reserved for you.

Is a VDS the same as a dedicated-CPU VPS?

Yes. Hosts use both names for a virtual server with reserved cores. We call it a VDS to keep it clearly separate from our shared-CPU VPS plans.

Is a VDS the same as a dedicated server?

No. A VDS is still a virtual machine: it shares the physical host’s memory bandwidth, storage and network with other customers, but its processor cores are yours. A dedicated server is the whole machine, with no hypervisor and no other tenants.

When is a VDS worth the extra cost?

When the processor stays busy for long stretches, such as databases under steady load, CI builds, video encoding or game servers, or when you need the same performance every time you measure it.
